I'm Susanne!

hey there

When I first started my online yoga business, I felt completely out of alignment with traditional sales tactics. The aggressive countdown timers, fake scarcity, and pushy “buy now or miss out forever” energy felt like everything yoga isn’t supposed to be.

If you’ve ever felt icky about marketing your yoga offerings, you’re not alone. The truth is, yoga teachers don’t have to use sleazy sales tactics to build successful businesses.

I’ll share three psychology principles that actually work for yoga teachers – without compromising your values or making you feel like a used car salesperson.

Why Traditional Marketing Feels Wrong for Yoga Teachers

Yoga teaches us about authenticity, mindfulness, and genuine connection. So when business coaches tell us to create fake urgency or use manipulative tactics, it creates internal conflict.

Here’s what I’ve learned: yoga teachers and their students connect differently. We value:

  • Authentic relationships over transactional interactions
  • Genuine transformation over quick fixes
  • Mindful decision-making over impulse purchases
  • Trust and integrity over pressure tactics

But here’s the thing – just because we reject pushy marketing doesn’t mean we should abandon marketing psychology entirely. When used ethically, these principles actually help our students make empowered decisions instead of staying stuck in hesitation forever.

The 3 Psychology Secrets That Work for Yoga Teachers

1. Anchoring: Helping Students Understand True Value

What it is: Anchoring gives your students context to understand the real value of your offerings.

Why it works: Without context, even reasonably priced offerings can feel expensive. Your students need a reference point to understand what they’re receiving.

How to use it authentically:

Good anchoring:

  • “This retreat normally costs $1,200 in-person. The online version gives you the same transformational content for $297.”
  • “Private sessions with me are $80 each. Inside this program, you’ll receive the equivalent of 6 private sessions, plus community support and bonus resources, all for $397.”

Avoid fake value stacks:

  • Don’t claim a PDF is “worth $500” when it clearly isn’t
  • Avoid inflated comparisons that feel dishonest
  • Never make up arbitrary values for bonuses

The yoga-aligned approach: Focus on real, comparable value. Compare to your actual session rates, in-person retreat costs, or similar offerings in your market.

2. Urgency: Creating Genuine Reasons to Act Now

What it is: Urgency provides a loving reason for students to make a decision now instead of procrastinating indefinitely.

Why it works: Without any timeline, most people will put off decisions forever – even when they really want what you’re offering.

How to create authentic urgency:

Real urgency examples:

  • “Enrollment closes Sunday so we can start together as a group on Monday”
  • “Join before Friday to be included in our live Q&A session”
  • “I’m only running this program twice this year – the next opportunity won’t be until fall”

Fake urgency to avoid:

  • Those evergreen countdown timers that reset every 24 hours (we’ve all seen them!)
  • “Only 1 spot left!” when you’re actually taking unlimited students
  • Arbitrary deadlines with no real reason behind them

The key difference: Your urgency should have a genuine reason that benefits your students, not just pressure them into buying.

3. Scarcity: Setting Loving Boundaries

What it is: Scarcity creates healthy boundaries around your offerings, making them feel more valuable and helping students commit fully.

Why it works: When something has limits, it feels more special and intentional. Boundaries also help students take the opportunity seriously.

How to use scarcity authentically:

Genuine scarcity examples:

  • “I’m keeping this group intimate for deeper connection, so I’m only accepting 12 students”
  • “This is my signature program that I only offer twice per year”
  • “I can only take on 3 new private clients this month”

False scarcity to avoid:

  • Claiming limited spots when you’re actually taking unlimited people
  • “Selling out soon!” when you have no real limits
  • Creating artificial restrictions just to pressure people

The yoga approach: Your scarcity should serve your students’ experience, not just create pressure. Smaller groups really do allow for more connection. Limited offerings really do make them more special.

How to Implement These Secrets in Your Yoga Business

For Online Courses and Programs:

  • Anchoring: Compare to your private session rates or similar programs
  • Urgency: Use enrollment periods with clear start dates
  • Scarcity: Limit group sizes for better student experience

For Retreats and Workshops:

  • Anchoring: Reference the cost of similar retreats or individual sessions
  • Urgency: Early bird pricing with real deadlines
  • Scarcity: Venue capacity or your desired group size

For Private Sessions and Packages:

  • Anchoring: Show savings compared to individual session rates
  • Urgency: Limited availability in your schedule
  • Scarcity: Your actual capacity for taking new clients

The Bottom Line: Authentic Marketing That Actually Works for Yoga Teachers

These psychology principles aren’t manipulative tricks – they’re tools to help your students make clear, empowered decisions. When you use them authentically, you’re actually providing a service.

Here’s what authentic marketing looks like for yoga teachers:

  • Truthful anchoring helps students understand real value
  • Genuine urgency provides loving structure for decision-making
  • Honest scarcity creates intentional, high-quality experiences

Your yoga students appreciate clarity. They want to understand the value, they need timelines to make decisions, and they’re attracted to experiences that feel special and intentional.
