When I first started as a business coach for yoga teachers back in 2016, I thought I had it all figured out. Sitting in a coworking space in Bali, I was bursting with excitement to share my knowledge. My strategy? Blogging. Every week, without fail, I’d publish a new post. “5 Mistakes Yoga Teachers Make on Social Media,” “Website Mistakes to Avoid,” “My Top 5 Tips for More Productivity as a Yoga Teacher” – you name it, I wrote about it.
Despite all that effort, something wasn’t clicking. My website traffic was more than okay, but it wasn’t translating into the kind of engagement or client conversions I’d hoped for. I felt like I was shouting into the void, sharing all this valuable information, but not really connecting with my audience.
Listen to this episode:
So in January 2020, I decided to start a podcast. I thought, “If people can hear my voice, surely that will build more trust and connection.” And to some extent, it did. The podcast allowed me to share my personality more, and I started to build a loyal listener base.
But the content was still pretty similar. My episodes were still too focused on the “how-to” aspect. “How to Build a Yoga Website,” “How to Use Instagram for Your Yoga Business,” “How to Create a Yoga Online Course” – that’s what I shared. While these topics were useful, they weren’t really allowing me to connect deeply with my audience or showcase my unique perspective.
I remember feeling stuck and uninspired, like I was just regurgitating information that could be found anywhere on the internet. I wasn’t bringing my full self to my content, and it showed.
Last summer, feeling frustrated and seeking a change, I decided to take a break from podcasting. I let go of my podcast editor and VA and focused on Instagram only. I saw other coaches getting clients left and right just from posting on social media, and I thought, “Maybe I’ll pivot to social media – that’s where all the action is, right?”
For a few months, I only posted on Instagram and tried my hand at YouTube videos. But the truth is, I was again trying to do what everybody else was doing, like sharing financial results or short reels. I was constantly chasing the next trend, trying to crack the algorithm code, and I hated it.
The results? Underwhelming, to say the least. My content was disappearing into the social media void faster than I could create it. I hated the pressure to constantly produce more AND I felt like my content just wasn’t good enough. I was stuck in the comparison game, and it was affecting my mindset and mental health.
That’s when I had my lightbulb moment. I realized that for me, sustainable, long-term growth isn’t about chasing social media trends or algorithms. It’s not even about how much educational content you can produce. It’s about creating intentional, meaningful content that resonates with your audience on a deeper level.
This insight led me back to my roots: podcasting and blogging. But this time, I approached it with a completely different strategy. I developed a unique method that not only simplifies content creation but also allows me to create more impactful, engaging content.
Here’s what changed:
#1 Personal Stories
Instead of just sharing information, I started weaving in my own stories. For example, I shared about my own struggle with imposter syndrome, or being in my fifties and single. These episodes did really well – so many of my listeners related to this and felt less alone in their journey.
#2 Sharing My Perspective
Instead of generic how-to content, I began sharing what I’m doing in my business. I mean, I already did that to some extent, but this time I made it much more clear. For example, I did an episode titled “A Breakdown of All My Expenses – The True Costs of Running an Online Business as a Solopreneur” and that did really well. It’s still educational, but it’s also clearly my take, my personal experience.
#3 Addressing Real Issues
I began tackling the limiting beliefs, myths, and questions my audience actually had. One episode that really resonated was “Getting over your fear of visibility” where I talked about how to overcome our fear of visibility and why it’s essential for growing a successful online business. That episode got a lot of downloads.
#4 Content Themes
Instead of random topics, I now work with clear themes that are related to what I sell and what I’m doing in my business.
#5 Balancing Education with Inspiration
While I still provide practical tips, I now focus more on inspiring and motivating my audience. It’s not just about the “how,” but also the “why” and the “what if.”
#6 Leveraging AI and Technology
I started using AI tools to help with research, content creation, editing, and repurposing. This dramatically cut down my content creation time while improving quality.
My content creation feels sustainable, easy, and fun. I’m no longer constantly chasing the next post or burning myself out trying to keep up with the social media hamster wheel.
Social media still has its place in my content strategy. I still maintain a presence on Instagram and other social platforms, but now I use them to share snippets of my longer-form content, engage with my community, and direct people to my podcast and freebies. It’s about quality over quantity, and using each platform for its strengths.
Here’s my challenge to you: Take a step back and look at your content strategy. Are you creating content that disappears into the void, or are you building a library of valuable resources that will continue to serve your audience and grow your business for years to come? If you already have a blog, are you sharing content that creates engagement, that builds a connection, or are you sharing things that could be written by anybody?
Remember, it’s not about doing more – it’s about doing what matters. Don’t become a content factory. Focus on creating intentional, evergreen content, and watch your business transform.
