Starting an online business is an exhilarating journey, full of opportunities for growth and impact. As someone who’s been in the online business world for years, I often get asked how I’d approach things if I were starting fresh today. In this post, I’ll share my insights on building a thriving online business in 2024, covering essential investments, key focus areas, what to say yes and no to, and crucial mindset shifts for success.

Essential Investments

When you’re just starting out, every dollar counts. But certain investments can significantly accelerate your growth and set a solid foundation for long-term success. A simple website builds trust with potential clients, and I recommend considering a platform like Showit for its design flexibility. Professional brand photos with high-quality, authentic images of yourself immediately elevate your brand’s perception. For email marketing, start with ConvertKit’s free plan and upgrade as your list grows. Lastly, invest in education through courses or coaching to save time and avoid costly mistakes. My first major investment was a course on launching online courses, which proved invaluable.

Where I’d Focus My Energy

If I were focusing my energy on starting a new online business, I’d commit to producing valuable, long-form content consistently from day one. Podcasting or video content would be a priority, as these mediums build trust and connection with your audience faster than text alone. I’d also focus on community building by creating a space where your audience can connect with you and each other, whether through a Facebook group, Skool platform, or regular live Q&A sessions. Launching higher-priced offers would be another key focus, as it takes the same energy to sell a low-priced offer as a high-priced one, but the financial impact is significantly different. Finally, I’d prioritize understanding my ideal client by regularly connecting with my audience through surveys and one-on-one conversations to truly understand their needs and challenges.

What I’d Say Yes To

In terms of opportunities, I’d say yes to collaborative ventures like co-hosting masterclasses or workshops with entrepreneurs in complementary niches. Participating in and even hosting online summits would be another priority to expand my reach and network.

What I’d Say No To

On the flip side, I’d say no to offering a wide array of services or products initially, instead focusing on becoming known for one thing and doing it exceptionally well. I’d resist taking on misaligned clients, sticking to my ideal client criteria even when it’s financially tempting to do otherwise. Chasing the latest trends would be off the table; I’d stay focused on mastering the fundamentals and remain consistent with core strategies. Lastly, I’d avoid comparing myself to others, focusing instead on my own path and unique value.

Crucial Mindset Shifts and Habits for Success

When it comes to mindset and habits for success, embracing a growth mindset is crucial. View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Cultivate an abundance mindset, seeing the market as full of opportunities rather than competition. Start each day with a mindset routine incorporating meditation, journaling, or visualization exercises. Commit to continuous learning by dedicating time each week to personal development and business strategy. Prioritize effective planning by setting aside time each week to align daily activities with larger business goals. Finally, celebrate your wins and acknowledge all progress, no matter how small it may seem.

Building an online business is a thrilling journey filled with challenges that push you to grow. It requires strategic thinking, creativity, and resilience. While it’s not always easy, the ability to create something meaningful and shape your own path makes it all worthwhile.

Remember, the most important step is to begin. You don’t need to have everything figured out from the start. Take action, learn from your experiences, and keep moving forward. Your unique perspective, skills, and message are valuable, and there are people out there who need exactly what you have to offer.
